Everyone is a reader...

I came across this quote while scrolling Pinterest today and it just embodies my own journey to becoming a reader.

When I was in 3rd grade we were told to choose a book to read when we were finished our work. When a kid walks up to a well-stocked classroom library it is HARD to choose, ESPECIALLY when you don’t know what books you like or if you even like to read. I can remember looking through the big brown bookshelf at all these chapter books and not knowing what to do. My beloved teacher, Mrs. Charlotte, helped me pick out the book, Misty of Chincoteague. I 👏 WAS 👏 HOOKED! The story was filled with great characters that became my friends. I finally was reading with comprehension and NOT having to reread and reread and reread as those of us ADD kids end up doing. Mrs. Charlotte had hooked me up with the right book and it made a world of difference.

I like to suggest series books to help my students get hooked on reading. Once they start reading they want more and lucky for all of us a series always provides more. Here are some books I've suggested over the years to get my own 2nd and 3rd-grade students hooked on reading:

Little House on the Prairie (doesn't age well, but I even got the boys hooked on it)

Junie B. Jones

Magic Tree House

Horrible Harry

Captain Underpants

Dogman

What book got you hooked on reading?
